What HOAX Our Right to Hope
can bring to Healthcare Professionals

Education

As HOAX Our Right to Hope is based on a true story, it provides invaluable insights into the difficulties faced by those experiencing mental health difficulties, as well as their partners, friends and family.

Patient-centred perspective

Crucially, as the source poetry for the artwork was written by Rob in real life, it gives an extremely intimate window into the mind of someone going through mental health difficulty, during the specific periods in which they were experiencing it.

Access to and engagement with ‘hard to reach’ groups

The HOAX Our Right to Hope 2017 tour offers healthcare professionals a route into groups that typically they struggle to engage with. Young people (aged 15-20 years) will be a key target, as will communities typically characterised as black, minority, ethnic and/or deprived.

Emotional voice

Ziggy’s Wish works to connect different stakeholder groups by using common emotional touchpoints to unlock conversation. HOAX Our Right to Hope speaks with the representative voice of a young British-Asian male, yet is supported by the professional voice of healthcare services. The artwork overcomes the differences in these two very different dialects by establishing a common language of emotion.

Innovation in patient care

Project-partner Psychosis Research Unit, and their study of how a) the general public, and b) people who identify themselves as at-risk, respond to HOAX Our Right to Hope will be a unique opportunity to explore new and alternative means of treating people experiencing mental health difficulties. By becoming involved, healthcare professionals can give voice to a conversation that will actively challenge and robustly seek to expand current treatment practices.

Validation

Mental health is an area surrounded by prejudice, ignorance and fear. For healthcare professionals, having others recognise the value of their work can be a key reward and motivator.

Training

The results from the two mental-health studies that the Psychosis Research Unit are running as part of this project will be made directly available to all participants. This will enable continued conversation to occur around the artwork’s themes, both from a patient and professional viewpoint.

What HOAX Our Right to Hope
can bring to Community Groups
and Local Organisations

Voice and representation

Ziggy’s Wish works to connect different stakeholder groups around important issues. By becoming involved with HOAX Our Right to Hope, community groups and local organisations can speak out and be heard across multiple sectors, whilst having their messages strengthened through common stakeholder aims.

Relatability

With 1 in 4 people experiencing mental health difficulty in their lifetime, the themes of HOAX Our Right to Hope have widespread relevance. The story speaks to everyone on at least one level and resonates on many: giving people the permission to speak about their own experiences in a supported space, with the unreserved honesty of the artwork leaving no room for judgement by others.

Bonding

A key aim of HOAX Our Right to Hope is to encourage family and friends of people with mental health problems to come with them to the tour event; with a further aim of encouraging increased awareness, acceptance and involvement; and an ultimate aim of growing the community-group network.

Tangible help for at-risk individuals

For those most psychologically vulnerable in the community, HOAX Our Right to Hope offers the chance of a safe and supported intervention through the study that project-partners Psychosis Research Unit (PRU) will run specifically for at-risk individuals. PRU are specialists in early intervention, and are highly experienced in all aspects of mental health treatment.

Professional relationships

As a collaborative model, through a series of facilitated meetings, HOAX Our Right to Hope will actively seek to make connections, or build on existing connections, between communities, and the arts centres, education centres and health-service providers that are local to them.

Subsided arts provision

Ziggy’s Wish has several key funding partners. This allows the release of a number of free and concessionary tickets for each tour event, to ensure that low-income does not act as a barrier to the HOAX Our Right to Hope experience.

Inspiration

Supporting vulnerable people in society can be challenging, rewarding, heart-breaking, life-making. HOAX Our Right to Hope demonstrates the power that narrative has to help carry people through difficult times.

What HOAX Our Right to Hope
can bring to Schools, Colleges
and Universities

Coursework and career direction

HOAX Our Right to Hope covers a number of different interest areas, and presents a tour event rich in relevance and insight for students and tutors alike. Associated fields include drama, theatre, dance, humanities, medical humanities, medicine, mental health, psychology, sociology, art, literature, illustration, and poetry.

Encouragement to counselling

With 1 in 4 people experiencing mental health difficulty in their lifetime, the themes of HOAX Our Right to Hope speak to the audience on a very relatable and personal level: giving individuals the understanding, encouragement and permission to talk about their own experiences.

Awareness raising and the challenging of stereotypes

Young people (aged 15-25 years) are especially vulnerable to the factors that can lead to mental health difficulties. They are also, however, the group who stigmatises mental health the most. HOAX Our Right to Hope offers schools, colleges and universities a route into the anti-stigma and anti-bullying debate, through an extremely powerful, real-life example.

Potentially life-changing experience

HOAX Our Right to Hope will particularly target groups who may not ordinarily have access to high-quality arts provision in their local area. The experience will therefore be profound: be it revelation or release. This is especially true of young audiences, who may never have experienced the degree of relatability and understanding that this artwork offers.

Tangible help for at-risk individuals

For students who are particularly vulnerable, HOAX Our Right to Hope offers the chance of a safe and supported intervention through the study that project-partners Psychosis Research Unit (PRU) will run specifically for at-risk individuals. PRU are specialists in early intervention, and are highly experienced in all aspects of mental health treatment.

Empowered voice

Rob's is a voice rarely heard but important to share. By becoming involved with HOAX Our Right to Hope, students and tutors can be part of the conversation to actively counter taboos around mental health: from depression and anxiety, through fear and addiction, to abuse and beyond.

can bring to Arts Venues

High-quality artwork

The HOAX Our Right to Hope ticket price will include the acclaimed stage musical HOAX My Lonely Heart, plus the award-winning graphic novel HOAX Psychosis Blues, and free access to the HOAX Our Right to Hope narrative app.

New and more diverse audiences

Marketing will utilise not only arts networks to reach the general public, but also health networks that deal particularly with ‘hard to reach’ communities where there is high incidence of mental health difficulty but low uptake of mental health services. These communities also demonstrate low engagement with the arts, and are often characterised as black, minority, ethnic and/or deprived. Young people (aged 15-20 years) will be a key target.

Audience development

There will be significant community and education-focused wraparound activity before and at each HOAX Our Right to Hope tour event: as well as the legacy of the associated mental-health studies that are also a part of this unique event; the results of which will be sent to every participant, highlighting the value of the arts in people’s everyday lives.

Multi-stakeholder engagement and strategic partnerships

The HOAX Our Right to Hope tour will actively seek to make connections, or build on existing connections, between arts centres and the communities, education centres and health-service providers that are local to them, in order to help develop local networks. It will also seek to connect these local networks with one another per tour region, such that resources and learnings between them can be shared.

By becoming involved, arts venues can give voice to a conversation that will actively reach out from health conferences and health rights campaigners, through tourist boards and academic papers, to legal policy and beyond.

Qualitative and quantitative evaluation

As well as expanding the artistic offering, the HOAX Our Right to Hope narrative app is also a sophisticated means of data capture. It is this that allows the mental-health studies to be carried out. In turn, the qualitative data gathered through this process, and analysed by project-partner Psychosis Research Unit, will provide quantitative evaluations around the success of HOAX Our Right to Hope as a collaborative artwork with social purpose.

Building and nurturing artist relationships

‘Multi-award-winning and multi-award-nominated, at a national and international level.’ Arts venues have both remit and responsibility to break down barriers that exist in their local areas, as well as in wider society.
